ChatGPT language models explained and compared

March 16th, 2025 - Jacco Valkenburg

The world of artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly, and OpenAI offers various ChatGPT models, each with unique applications. For HR professionals and recruiters, choosing the right model can assist with tasks such as writing job descriptions, screening CVs, and improving candidate experience.

Below is an overview of the available ChatGPT language models, their features, and how to make the most of them.

GPT-3.5 (November 2022, Deprecated Model)

GPT-3.5 was the first publicly available language model, launched in November 2022. It was designed to improve response speed and reduce costs, making it suitable for simple tasks and casual conversations. This model is no longer in use.

GPT-4 (14 March 2023, Deprecated Model)

GPT-4 provided safer and more effective responses, excelling in reliability, creativity, and collaboration. It was also capable of reading and understanding images. However, its average response time was slow, at 5.4 seconds.

This graph lays out how GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 did on various recent U.S. exams. For instance, GPT-4 made the top 10% in a simulated lawyer exam. GPT-3.5? Bottom 10%.

GPT-4o (13 May 2024)

GPT-4o is currently OpenAI’s most powerful widely available model. It is accessible to all users, though free users have usage limits. The “o” in GPT-4o stands for “omni,” meaning it can also process audio and video.

The response time has been improved to 320 milliseconds, comparable to human reaction speed. You can now have fluent (video) conversations with ChatGPT as if speaking to a real person.

It is powerful, fast, and versatile in text processing, reasoning, and creativity. This model excels in tasks requiring a combination of language comprehension, analytical skills, and generative creativity.

Applications in HR & Recruitment:

  • Optimising job descriptions: Create well-structured and engaging job ads.
  • Analysing CVs and cover letters: Quickly perform an initial screening.
  • Generating interview questions: Create relevant questions based on job requirements.
  • Enhancing candidate experience: Personalise communication with applicants.
  • Drafting HR documents: Write policies, internal communications, and employee handbooks.

GPT-4o with Scheduled Tasks

This version adds the ability to schedule and track tasks, meaning you can assign tasks to the model and follow up on them later. This makes workflows more efficient.

Applications in HR & Recruitment:

  • Managing candidate follow-ups: Set reminders for follow-ups.
  • Supporting long-term projects: For example, scheduling steps in a recruitment campaign.
  • Tracking training & development: Monitor learning progress and suggest next steps.

o1 (5 December 2024)

This model is designed for advanced reasoning and deep analysis. The “o1” in GPT-o1 stands for “optimised reasoning”, meaning the model takes more time to think before responding, making it highly effective for complex scientific, mathematical, and programming problems.

Applications in HR & Recruitment:

  • Conducting assessment analysis: Evaluate test results and predict candidate performance.
  • Identifying recruitment challenges: Analyse why certain vacancies are difficult to fill.
  • Analysing HR reports and KPIs: Extract valuable insights from workforce data.

o3-mini (20 December 2024)

A fast and efficient model for advanced reasoning. While less powerful than GPT-4o, it is ideal for quick analyses and simple tasks.

Applications in HR & Recruitment:

  • Fast CV screening: Perform an initial selection without delays.
  • Quick HR advisory responses: Provide fast insights into job market trends.
  • Automating simple tasks: Draft emails, FAQs, and policy summaries.

o3-mini-high (31 January 2025)

A variant of o3-mini that is optimised for programming and logic-based tasks. This model is particularly useful for HR professionals dealing with data analysis and automated HR systems.

Applications in HR & Recruitment:

  • Automating HR processes: Improve recruitment tools and talent management systems using AI.
  • Data analysis in recruitment: Process large datasets of applicants and identify trends.
  • HR tech integration: Connect ATS systems with other software solutions.

GPT-4.5 (27 February 2025)

GPT-4.5 is a model focused on writing and exploring ideas. It offers enhanced creativity and depth in content creation but is still under development.

Applications in HR & Recruitment:

  • Employer branding and content creation: Write blogs, social media posts, and press releases.
  • Developing innovative HR strategies: Brainstorm new hiring and retention strategies.
  • Analysing job market trends: Identify and predict workforce patterns.
